WELCOME TO ST. PAUL'S!
Message from the Rector I want to welcome you personally to Saint Paul’s Church in the Chestnut Hill community of Philadelphia. Our doors are wide open to people of all backgrounds from many different neighborhoods. Our vision of the church is to be a safe place for genuine dialogue and conversation, turning to one another in Christ. Emblematic of this was the gathering of clergy from the North and from the South at the consecration of our church in 1865 just after the Civil War. We are a safe place where even former enemies may gather at our altar. The purpose of Saint Paul’s is to be “a wellspring of spiritual nourishment and a river of service in Jesus’ Name.” We place a high emphasis on being friends, reading the Bible, worship and prayer. We preach with great joy the gospel of Jesus Christ and are awed by the lives that are being transformed here. We serve Jesus through hands-on ministry with the homeless, the hungry and the elderly. The Bishop of Mississippi came to Saint Paul’s to talk about the needs of the church and communities along the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina. We administer outreach grants to over 15 mission projects annually. You will notice when you come into Saint Paul’s Church that there are over 55 hand-carved angels in stone and wood. I like to think of Saint Paul’s as “The Church of the Angels!” Angels are the ancient and ever-present messengers of peace and protection. Maybe you are one of those messengers of peace, or seeking peace. Here you will find a safe place for dialogue, a place that will nourish your soul and many opportunities to serve others. So whether you’re a spiritual seeker who’s just starting to ask questions about God, or a committed Christian who wants to sink the roots of your faith even deeper, you will find a wide spiritual tradition from which to draw.
