Christian Education for Children
Sundays 9:40–10:20 a.m., Church School Wing
Spiritual formation at St. Paul’s begins in our Godly Play classrooms where the carefully prepared environments send the unspoken message to children as young as three years old that this is sacred space. Here is where the mystery takes root, a personal journey for each child that grows richer and deeper each year that the child experiences the lessons of the spiraling Godly Play curriculum. This is a very special curriculum indeed that gives children a language for their spiritual unfolding. It is more than a curriculum though. It is a way of being in community with others that models in loving ways how Christians behave with one another. There is a place in the circle, just as there is a place at the table, for everyone.
The recurring themes of the Godly Play stories draw children into their own wondering about the elusive presence of God. Children grow a sensitivity to the complexities of God, forming a personal relationship with God in the process. Through sacred stories, parables and liturgical actions, they learn the language of the Christian people. Where this leads them as they grow and develop from the concrete brain to the abstract one, in perhaps the biggest mystery of all, is to that place, “where words and thinking alone cannot take us.” (J. Berryman, The Complete Guide to Godly Play, Vol. 4, p. 112.)
“To whom the lips of children…” (Hymn 154)
Noticed on a church sign (a play on the Trix cereal ad): “Silly rabbit – Easter is about Jesus.”
