New Owners of the Top of the Hill Lot Restricting Parking

By Ian Howell , 12:13 pm

As many discovered on Sunday, April 29, the new owners of the parking lot adjacent to Saint Paul’s and the Top of the Hill Plaza have closed the lot to the general public, and are barring its use by anyone other than patrons of the Top of the Hill shops and Spa Elysium and Fringe Salon. For the time being, Saint Paul’s parishioners should refrain from parking in that lot while attending services or other activities at Saint Paul’s.

The Rector and Vestry are investigating the legalities of the parking situation and will be communicating further with the lot owners. We are hopeful that the church will regain the use of the lot for parishioners, but it may take some time before the situation is resolved. In the meantime, Saint Paul’s parishioners should use other alternatives for parking. Available alternatives are the small parking lot behind Dixon House, the Medical Building lot opposite the church on Chestnut Hill Avenue (on Sunday mornings only), parking along the church driveway and on-street parking.

Sustainability tip of the week

For those looking to get rid of unwanted or expired batteries, there are more options than you might think.  Household Batteries (A, AA, AAA, C, D, 9v) Whole Foods Markets offer battery drop-off points in their stores for recycling.  Rechargeable Batteries Best Buy: Area Best Buys will accept two electronic items a day, including rechargeable batteries. A new non-profit set up by the non-rechargeable battery industry called the ‘Corporation for Battery Recycling’ is working on an environmentally positive and economically sustainable solution to handling single use batteries. You can stay updated on their progress by visiting http://www.recyclebattery.org

Thank you stewards!

Christian stewards in today’s world have no easy task.  It is akin to swimming upstream.  An old axiom puts our stewardship mission in perspective: “Only dead fish swim with the current.”  We live in a materialistic world.  Of this there is little doubt.  The point of Christian stewardship is not to repay God or our church what we owe.  The point of Christian stewardship is to share what God has given us.  When we share God’s bounty, we live up to the promise of scripture.  Thank you stewards for your willingness to go against the materialist current and to share cheerfully of God’s bounty.  (meditations by David Mosser)

Thank you, stewards!

Stewards do the Lord’s bidding even if it raises some eye-brows.  One congregation housed sixty hurricane evacuees for over a month.  Most praised this but as you can imagine many questioned the number of strangers in the church and the inconvenience to the church schedule.  The minister empathized but said: “We are a church.  These people are in need.  Churches help those who are in need.”  Stewards do what God calls them to do.  (meditations by David Mosser)

Sustainability tip of the week

By Ian Howell , 10:19 am

On this Earth Day you might consider joining 350.org, a grass roots movement in over 188 countries working to solve the climate crisis. To preserve our planet, scientists tell us we must reduce the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere from its current level of 392 parts per million to below 350 ppm, hence the name 350.org.

Thank you, stewards!

By Ian Howell , 10:18 am

The world witnesses God’s call to righteousness in us through our acts of stewardship. Mark Twain said, “Always do right – this will gratify some and astonish the rest.” Those who demonstrate an abiding relationship with God in Jesus reveal themselves in the small and loving acts shown to others. They celebrate with joy; they listen to heart-ache; they volunteer to serve; they give generously to the ministries of the church. Thank you, stewards. (meditations by David Mosser)

“Keep your heads up”

By Cliff Cutler , 10:06 am

It is so easy today with all the negativity in our society to feel down and worry that prospects are dim.  I remember someone saying once, “keep your heads up.”  What he meant was along the lines of Psalm 139:13 (though I doubt he could have quoted it): “I will thank you (God) because I am marvelously made;  your works are wonderful, and I know it well.”  We are to never forget that each one of us is marvelously made.  Keep your heads up.  Give it your all.
