CLERGY AND STAFF The Rev. E. Clifford Cutler, Rector
The Reverend Edward Clifford Cutler became St. Paul’s eleventh rector on February 1, 2006 and was installed in a festive ceremony celebrating his new ministry on February 4. Cliff came to St. Paul’s after 21 years as rector of St. Stephen’s in Cohasset, Massachusetts. A native of Philadelphia, he grew up in Montgomery County and graduated from Germantown Academy in 1967 (a member of its last all boys class). During his youth Cliff was a member of St. Thomas' Whitemarsh, where he sang in the youth choir and was active in the EYC program (of which he was president). After graduating with a major in psychology from Trinity College, Hartford, in 1971, he worked as membership and public relations director for McBurney YMCA in New York City, which is where he met his future wife, Amy. Our rector attended the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, graduating in 1976. His first parish assignment was as curate of the Memorial Church of St. George in Ardmore from 1976 to 1978. He then spent seven years as vicar of St. Luke's Church in Kensington. In 1985, Mr. Cutler was called to St. Stephen's as rector. During his time there, the parish grew tremendously. Active in the Diocese of Massachusetts, Cliff was dean of the South Shore Deanery at the time of his call to St. Paul’s. He served on the master plan committee for the Barbara C. Harris Camp and Conference Center and concluded his four-year term on diocese’s standing committee (1990-1994) as its president. In Cohasset he was a founding member of the community-wide effort to prevent drug and alcohol abuse called Project Safeguard. He says that, “I am interested in the theology of praise. In 1997, during a sabbatical, I spent five weeks in Wales and was introduced to the tradition there of praise poetry. In poetry that goes back more than a thousand years one finds an understanding of praise as the recreation of a world unblemished by violence. More recently I have also begun to appreciate the tradition of African praise poetry. I know of no more important theological assertion today than praise. “In 2003 over lunch I had a chance to speak with Archbishop [of Canterbury] Rowan Williams about this. His comment was that praise ‘unscrews’ the ego out of disagreements so that they can be resolved civilly.” He also loves reading, sports and music. After accepting his call to Chestnut Hill he said that, “I believe that God is calling me to minister among you. There can be no greater joy than that. My gift as a pastor is to come alongside people and parishes to help them discover the best in themselves and the promise that God holds out for us all.” Cliff and Amy Cutler are the parents of two sons, Evan and Seth. The Rev. Nancy B. Dilliplane, Assistant Rector
My ministry at St. Paul’s has as a main focus spiritual formation (particularly with children and youth) and pastoral care, though I look forward to journeying together in all walks of our parish life. I was ordained to the priesthood in the Diocese of Pennsylvania in December of 2006, and previously served as a transitional deacon and assistant rector at Christ Church in Rockville, Maryland. I studied at the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia, and received my M.Div. from General Theological Seminary in New York. Prior to attending seminary, I worked as a lay professional in the church, as Director of Christian Formation for children, youth and adults, and I also have experience as a geriatric social worker, small business owner and human development consultant. I live in Yardley, Pennsylvania, where I am mother to three children: Kathy (19), Keith (17) and Rachel (14), wife to one husband, Steve (old enough to know better), walker of one dog, Pandora, and acolyte to two cats. In moments of Sabbath time, I enjoy weaving, spinning, playing flute, eating chocolate, reading and watching movies. Please make yourselves known to me, and keep me in your prayers, as you are daily in mine! Blessings, Nancy
